A 100 day underseas mission combining research and ocean conservation outreach

conducted from Jules’ Undersea Lodge in Key Largo, Florida

March 1 - June 9, 2023

Dr Joe Dituri surfaces after spending 100 days in Jules' Undersea Lodge

Dr Joe Dituri laughs as he sees the sun for the first time in 100 days, surfacing from his mission on Friday June 9 2023 at 10:35 AM.

Project NEPTUNE combined a long term study of the physiological and psychological effects of compression on the human body and used the uniqueness of the mission and location to bring more awareness of current marine research and the importance of conservation of our ocean’s resources and processes. Watch this to learn more about the mission. Watch to see the research results (Starts at the 12:15 mark).

The Science

Dr. Joseph Dituri lived for 100 days in Jules’ Undersea Lodge, an underwater habitat submerged in a lagoon in Key Largo, Florida. During the entire stay he conducted daily experiments in human physiology and demonstrate and used new technology. The International Board of Undersea Medicine was a major sponsor of the Project NEPTUNE 100 mission. Learn more about the science missions going on during the 100 days!

The Outreach

Project NEPTUNE aimed to boost support for  marine conservation from its unique undersea base on the bottom of a tropical lagoon. The former undersea laboratory served as a “Digital Studio in the Sea” broadcasting interviews and science demonstrations from researchers and policy makers to ocean enthusiasts around the world. Scientists, educational groups, and relevant non-profit organizations had the opportunity to arrange an online chat with him.

Dr. Joe interacted directly with 5,579 students & teachers in 125 zoom calls, 6 onsite visits, and 9 overnight Young Explorer Missions! In addition, our social media pages received nearly 200,000 interactions from our Project NEPTUNE posts. More data is being collected!
