Art MitchellArt Mitchell Memorial Fund

Art Mitchell was the most influential Education Director for MRDF's MarineLab Environmental Education Program, heading the program from 1986 until his retirement in 2007. Through his hard work, connections with the educational community, and scientific and educational abilities, Art created the MarineLab program that is still being taught today. Although it's been updated with new technology and new information, the core curriculum of seagrass, mangrove, and coral reef ecology remain the backbone and framework for all our MarineLab programs.

Art loved introducing the marine world to students, especially those students who had no or very little previous exposure to the ocean. He knew how learning about the ocean could be life-changing to these children, opening new worlds and new possibilities to them. When Art passed away from complications of Parkinson's disease in 2017, MRDF decided to create a scholarship fund in his memory, dedicated to helping Florida kids receiving free or reduced lunch to attend a MarineLab program. Art's daughter Kelly generously matched a seed donation provided by the Foundation to create the Art Mitchell Fund.

How the funds are distributed

Funds are available to assist students to attend a MarineLab program that is scheduled for their class or school. Only Florida public school students currently receiving free or reduced lunches are eligible for the awards. Teachers must complete a short application form describing why they feel these particular students would benefit from participating in a MarineLab program.

The idea is to help students attend with their peers, thus including them in an enrichment adventure that they may not have otherwise been able to experience.
