RESEARCH SUPPORT FACILITIES
For visiting researchers, the location of the Marine Resources Development Foundation facility provides unparalleled access to the seagrass and mangrove communities of Florida Bay on the bayside and the varied reef communities of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park on the oceanside. All these marine communities can be reached within minutes by boat, and yet we're only 65 miles from Miami International Airport, with close proximity to necessities such as grocery stores, marine and nautical supply stores, and medical services.
In addition to our convenient location, MRDF has a building with dorms and lab, classrooms, dockage for research vessels, limited use of our boats with an operator/guide aboard, and a protected lagoon with full dive shop support for SCUBA training and activities. The presence and availability of not one, but two underwater habitats rounds off a unique opportunity for scientists and educators to conduct research or present undergraduate or graduate courses in the subtropical climate of Key Largo.
